Rwanda, Prison of Gitarama. The Hell of the Living.

PRISON of GITARAMA, November 1996. 7.000 men of Hutu ethnical group, accused of the massacre, between Hutu and Tutsi in 1994, that has caused the death of one million people, they are waiting for a formerly announced sentence: death. The prison of Gitarama is about 37 miles South-East of the capital Kigali. High walls surround the hell of living, authors of a people's massacre: the Tutsi. It was the Hutu who in the crazy nights of the summer 1994 started the slaughter of the century with a "machete": one million people. Inside the jail there is no space to lie down or sleep. They do it by turns in the only two big rooms that let them take shelter from the bad weather. In 1995 the Italian Caritas, a charitable arm of the Italian Bishops Conference, extended the yard of the prison so that these men could live in a "more human" condition. The data of the First Aid, founded by Caritas, denounced about 20 death a day for having been crushed in stampedes, viral diseases such as AIDS and fights. Amnesty International denounced the violation of human rights. In a jail for 600 persons, they were 7.000. Email me
